Hillsborough Terriers fall to the East Lake Eagles in preseason game

Before the game, Jahaad Malphus carried chains around his neck as the team entered the field.

The Terriers fell to the East Lake Eagles, 16-0, Aug. 18 in their preseason opener.

After the 22-mile drive out to East Lake in Tarpon Springs, the Terriers unloaded from the bus and trudged towards the locker room. The Terriers took the field in silence, with senior Jahaad Malphus carrying black chains around his neck. And just like that, it was football season.

The sidelines busy and loud with play calls. Shouts for Coach Graff to ensure all equipment was functional. Graff repeatedly shouting “back up” to the players. Not much changed off the field.

On the field, however, things changed. With several key starters lost to graduation, others, like Malphus had to step up to help the team. With several tackles throughout the night and an extra point block, Malphus helped the Terriers limit East Lake to two touchdowns, until the Eagles got into field goal territory late in the fourth to give them the 16-point lead.

Hillsborough (0-1) hosts Plant (1-0), a 46-42 winner over Venice, next Friday, Aug. 25th at 7 pm.
