Girls soccer beats Leto in first round of districts

Lady Terriers soccer secure their spot in the next round of the districts with 1-0 win over Leto.

January 18, 2017

Hillsborough’s girls soccer team kicked off the district championships with a 1-0 win over Leto.

The win, led by junior Katherine Bowers’ goal made within the last nine minutes of the first half, will advance the Lady Terriers to the next round of districts against Mitchell.

Despite the win, the team walked away less than satisfied with the game’s results.

Earlier this season, Hillsborough beat Leto, 6-0. “Our expectations were a lot higher than how we played,” junior Haley Michael said.

Teammates believe that Leto came into the championship game under the impression that Hillsborough would be easy to beat. “We played Middleton: we won 1-0, and Leto beat them 2-1,” sophomore Michie Guzman said. “I think they thought that they could beat us because they thought we had gotten worse.”

The Lady Terriers said that this assumption is what affected the Leto’s performance this game. “The team looked like they were a lot more physical this game,” said coach Ted Pamplona of Leto’s performance.

However, Hillsborough said that there were some issues on the home front that may have contributed to its performance. “Some people weren’t playing their normal positions tonight,” Guzman said. “I feel like it weakened us a little, but I think we still did well.”

The team also recognized that there were some issues regarding the spacing and passing, which could have contributed to more goals.

However, there were also many high points which led to the Lady Terriers’ overall success. “We definitely passed pretty well, and we took some good shots [along with a series of successful blocks by goalie Brianna Joseph],” Michael said.

Although the team walked away wishing for a more impressive score, at the end of the day, the game was a win for Hillsborough and had many positive plays. “Once we put the ball down on the ground and knocked it around, we looked pretty good,” Pamplona said.

The Lady Terriers’ next game is on Feb. 18 at Sickles High School, where they will be facing Mitchell in the second championship game of the series.
