What to watch during Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month spans from Sept. 15 to Nov. 26. This period of time is dedicated to recognizing the contributions of Latino and Hispanic Americans to the group’s culture and heritage.
On Netlfix, there are several movies that will expose you to the culture, struggles and values of the Hispanic and Latino population.
A personal favorite is “Frida.” The movie features Salma Hayek as Frida Kahlo. Hayek captures the essence of Kahlo’s confidence, intelligence and talent. It is a true story based on Kahlo’s path to fame and tumultuous relationship with painter Diego Rivera. Kahlo and Rivera are two of the most well-known artists in Mexican history. It is an excellent choice if you are interested in art, history, politics or all of the above. This biopic also won two Academy Awards and one Golden Globe.
Another option is “Under the Same Moon.” The movie is about a little boy named Carlos and his journey to be reunited with his mother, Rosario. Carlos’ mom crossed the border into the U.S. and moved to Los Angeles. She moved to the U.S. so she could find a better job and send money home to her son. Both Rosario and Carlos hate being separated, but Rosario does not want her son to be hiding from the police as an illegal immigrant. Carlos makes the bold decision to defy his mother and embarks on a journey to find her. It is the story of a fearless 10-year-old who will stop at nothing to be reunited with his mom. The movie depicts the reality of many Hispanic and Latino families. It illustrates the hardships, sacrifices and challenging decisions millions of people have had to make. It is a movie that captivates you with its many plot twists.
“Y Tu Mamá También” is the story of two rich teens who are looking for a way to create a memorable summer. The boys meet an older woman named Rosario and tell her the story of a magnificent vacation that they have actually never been on. When Rosario asks to accompany them, they decide to make the trip a reality. The trio goes on a road trip to a secluded beach, but not without a few roadblocks. The movie includes the challenges of friendship, entering adulthood and the drawbacks of growing up. The two boys are played by Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, who were childhood friends. They shared several awards for the movie, which was received well by critics.
